Commack School District Sends LAC To Albany To Advocate For Students

Commack School District’s Legislative Advocacy Committee and Senator Mattera in the State Capitol Building in Albany.Commack School District’s Legislative Advocacy Committee (LAC), established to assist the Board of Education in implementing solutions regarding legislative matters, traveled to New York State’s capitol in Albany to meet with Senator Mattera and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Deputy Commissioners and Associates. The LAC is composed of the Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education members, Commack residents, High School students, Commack staff, and members of the collective bargaining units. The group focuses on assessing the impact of existing and proposed State and Federal education legislation, advocating for legislation that supports the District’s schools, staff, and students, and communicating vital information to our residents.

In the meeting with Senator Mattera, the committee focused its attention on Commack’s experiential learning, mental health support within the district, and local decisions on graduation measures, among other topics important to our community.

When meeting with NYSED, the committee and Commack Schools Superintendent, Dr. Cox, discussed Commack’s robust academic programs. Specifically, they introduced Commack’s new IB career-related pathways to graduation, project-based learning, and hands-on career and technical education programs. Commack has IB programs not only for high achieving high school students but also for middle school students through our Middle Years Programme.
