EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY (NOVEMBER 28) NO PICK UP OF GLASS IN RECYCLE PAILS

The Town of Smithtown wants residents to know that the town’s recycling program is changing and part of that change begins with the scheduled November 28th recyclable pick-up. Residents need to be aware that Smithtown will no longer pick-up glass as part of the recycle program.

According to the town’s public information officer, Nicole Gargiulo, residents will be able to drop off glass at the MSF on Old Northport Rd., Smithtown Highway Department on Nesconset Hgwy. and at Town Hall or they may include glass in the regular trash.

Smithtown will continue to pick-up recyclables that are mixed paper, cardboard and plastic for the remainder of 2018. In 2019 the program will revert to the pre 2015 recycle program where paper and cardboard  (without grease ex. pizza boxes) will be picked up one day and plastics /cans will be picked up the following week.

According to Gargiulo the town has been trying to address the recycling problem created when China announced that it would no longer accept recyclables. Local contractors faced economic uncertainty and withdrew from contracts. The Town has entered into a six-month renewable arrangement with the Town of Brookhaven, Southold, and villages of Ashroken and Loyd Harbor,  accepting their recyclable material at $5 a ton which will be sold along with Smithtown’s. Winters Brothers will pick up paper/cardboard and Trinity Transportation will pick up plastic/metal.
