Man Gets 50 Years For 2018 Fatal Shooting Of Homeless Man

DA SINI: BAY SHORE MAN SENTENCED TO 50 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR 2018 MURDER IN CENTRAL ISLIP

(RIVERHEAD, N.Y.) – Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini today announced the sentencing of a Bay Shore man to 50 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a man in Central Islip in November 2018.

Enrique Vega Jr., 48, of Bay Shore, was convicted by a jury on July 12 of Murder in the Second Degree, an A felony; two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a C violent felony; and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, a B felony.

“Vega shot the victim six times in the middle of the street, not only killing the victim but endangering the lives of several bystanders,” District Attorney Sini said. “He is likely going to spend the rest of his life in prison for this senseless, cold-blooded murder. With today’s sentence, justice was served by Assistant District Attorneys Laura Newcombe and Dan Cronin.”

At approximately 12:52 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2018, Vega shot and killed Michael Evans, 54, who was undomiciled, on Suffolk Avenue in Central Islip in connection with an alleged drug debt. Video surveillance shows that Vega fired six shots at Evans using a handgun, which he possessed illegally. Evans’ body was found by responding police officers from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Precinct and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Following an investigation by the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad, Vega was arrested for the murder on Dec. 3, 2018. Upon his arrest, Vega was found in possession of approximately 12.8 grams of crack cocaine.

Vega’s trial began on July 9 and the jury returned a verdict of guilty on July 12.

Vega was sentenced today by Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei to 25 years to life in prison on the Murder charge; 15 years in prison on each of the Criminal Possession of a Weapon charges, to run concurrent to each other and consecutive to the other counts; and 10 years in prison on the charge of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance to run consecutive to the other counts, for a total of 50 years to life in prison.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Laura Newcombe, of the Homicide Bureau, and Daniel Cronin, of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau, with assistance from Assistant District Attorney Daryl Levy, of the Homicide Bureau.
