Smithtown 10th Grader Shivani Rao Recipient Of Usdan Summer Camp Scholarship

Young Artists from Across Long Island and New York City Chosen for Full Scholarships From Record-Number of Applicants

NEW YORK, NY (April 4, 2019) - Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts, the critically acclaimed summer day camp for the arts marking its 51st year, today announced the 2019 class of “Uniquely U” Scholarship recipients.

Heralding creativity and self-expression, the search asked young artists in grades 2 through 12 from the New York City region, to submit a video explaining what makes them unique alongside samples of their creative artwork. After reviewing hundreds of applications received from across Long Island and around New York City, Usdan selected five extremely unique young artists to receive full seven-week “Uniquely U” scholarships for this summer:

  •  Creative Writing: Madeline Lee (4th Grade, Syosset, NY)
  •  Dance: Aissatou Bah (6th Grade, Bronx, NY)
  •  Music: Akari Hunte (8th Grade, Brooklyn, NY
  •  Theater: Josephine Sullivan (6th Grade, Huntington Station, NY)
  • Visual Art: Shivani Rao (10th Grade, Smithtown, NY)

As well, Bronx Charter School for the Arts (Bronx, NY) and John Phillip Sousa Elementary (Port Washington, NY) tied for the largest number of “Uniquely U” applicants from among their students.  Each earned the opportunity to award the School Scholarship — a full seven-week Usdan scholarship for any student they choose.

“Hundreds of unique and talented young artists inspired us with their submissions,” says Lauren Brandt Schloss, Executive Director of Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts. “The authenticity and sincerity demonstrated by all the applicants reinforces our hopefulness for this season at camp—and, frankly, for the future as a whole—where kids like will transform world in which we live with their creativity.”
